Bishopsgate: Ward Club Update – October 2026

The Bishopsgate Ward Club, founded in 1790, was originally a forum for the merchants, traders and other interested parties of the Ward to express their views to the Aldermen and Common Councillors, linking them to the governance of the City.

Like most of the 23 Ward Clubs  in the City of London we support the charities of the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs, although charity is not our primary purpose.

Our programme is based on core events in and around the City of London:
Annual dinner at a City or other location
Civic Lunch – usually held in the Crypts at Guildhall, with our speaker usually the Lord Mayor or Sheriff
Christmas carol service, followed by lunch – St Botolph-without- Bishopsgate
    AGM and lunch
    Weekend away – in Europe/UK

Additionally the President for the year organises a programme of events, both daytime and evening, which are usually built around a visit to a location of interest, and a meal, so that our members can meet new friends as well as learning about new places and organisations.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is available to individuals with an interest in the activities and aims of the Club – non-political, friendly, interested in the City of London history and traditions, and supportive of the City civic.

Prospective members must be proposed and seconded by existing members of the Club. To obtain a membership application form please use our Contact facility to email us. If you do not know a current member we will arrange for you to meet some of our Committee members to learn more about us. Membership is £25 per year payable by standing order each January.

Update from the Preident of Bishopsgate Ward Club: Wendy Hyde

The President’s weekend this year was to the South of France when 34 members of the Club had the chance to enjoy the arts and culture of the region, including its food and wine, all in glorious sunny weather.

Looking forward to the autumn the Club has a varied programme to look forward to. There will be a visit to the London Archive to learn about their work and to see documents related to the Ward.

On 2 November the Annual Dinner will be held in the historic surroundings of the Crypt at St Etheldreda’s, catered by Bleeding Heart Restaurants.

The Annual Carol Service will be on Friday 18 December at St Botolph’s Bishopsgate followed by lunch in the church hall.

Membership of the Ward Club is open to anyone with an interest in Bishopsgate and the wider City with a modest annual subscription of £25.

If you are interested in joining, please contact the Hon. Secretary, Frauke Schreiber at secretary@bishopsgatewardclub.org.uk  who will be happy to help.
