This evening, Guildhall’s historic assets were gleaming for the white-tie reception and banquet in honour of President and Mrs Macron, who are in the UK for a 3 day state visit.
The event brings together representatives from across the City of London who have cultural, commercial and philanthropic ties to France, many of whom play a significant role in the economic success of the enduring relationship.

Upon his arrival, the President was invited by the Lord Mayor to inspect the British Armed Forces mustered in Guildhall Yard.
As someone with family roots in the East-End of London, there was something brilliantly cultural about hearing them play both ‘Knees up Mother Brown’ and ‘My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)’. My cockney grandparents would find that rather amusing I imagine.

The Lord Mayor then made introductions to the Sheriffs and their consorts, the Chief Commoner, the City Marshall, the Sword Bearer, the Common Cryer and Sergeant-at-Arms, before moving onto the Town Clerk, Remembrancer, Police Commissioner and the reception committee (formed from the Civic Affairs Sub Committee of Policy and Resources).
On behalf of the King, Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also present, as guests of honour.

There was a brief reception in the Livery Hall before guests were called in for dinner in the Great Hall.
Speeches then commenced, with the Lord Mayor speaking first, followed by the President of the French Republic.
