Bishopsgate: London Liverpool Street – Roof Renovation Update

Network Rail’s London Liverpool Street Station has been undertaking long-awaited renovations of its roof structure, delivered by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. They have replaced most of the old glazing panels over platforms 1-10, including all of the old lichen-covered panels, letting so much natural light stream into the station below.

The work hasn’t just about natural daylight though, the new roof panels will help cut out rainwater leaks. For years, commuters have spoken to me about the buckets which are cornered off across the concourse to catch the leaky roof’s surplus when its raining!

These works will also improve the drainage system around the station, with new metal guttering, which should help to reduce the risk of weather-related train delays!

Inside the station, mobile scaffolding decks have been suspended from the roof. The contractor has been moving these decks, one section at a time, towards the concourse and are allowing the contractor to work safety overhead while the station remains open. Traditional scaffolding, built from the ground up, is being used between platforms 7 and 8 as the roof structure wouldn’t allow the suspended scaffolding deck in this area.

Scaffolding will be removed as part of Network Rail’s planned 8 day closure over Christmas. During that time 168 glass panels above the concourse will be replaced, in addition to replacing cracked and broken panels.

Great to see this work finally taking place to support this Grade II listed building.
