This week, the Court of Common Council has elected Councillor Ben Murphy onto the City of London Police Authority Board.
The Board’s role is to make sure the City of London Police runs an effective and efficient service by holding the Commissioner to account; to ensure value for money in the way the police is run, and to set policing priorities taking into account the views of the community.
The City of London Police also leads the UK’s national policing strategy for fraud, economic and cyber crime, which includes running Action Fraud and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) and cybercrime reporting centre. In this role, it worked extremely closely with the Home Office, the National Cyber Security Centre, Trading Standards, Companies House and HMRC.
Fraud is a significant and growing problem for the UK. It is the most prevalent crime against individuals in England and Wales, accounting for an estimated 41% of crime reflected in the Crime Survey for England and Wales for the year ending September 2024.

The City of London also plays an important role in Counter Terrorism, working closely with the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command SO15 and the British Transport Police.
As the elected Councillor for the Ward of Bishopsgate, which includes London’s Liverpool Street Station, Ben is no stranger to working with police and security teams. Bishopsgate remains the highest crime area in the Square Mile, as a hub for the night time economy, anti-social behaviour, theft and street begging.
