I was delighted to join the High Commissioners of Commonwealth countries at Mansion House this evening for the annual banquet, where trade and other mutual interests are discussed and promoted.
There was also a particular focus on the benefits of international sport, as the United Kingdom prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July 2026. The baton was present at Mansion House for the banquet. We are reminded that 1.6 billion people aged between 16 and 29 live in commonwealth countries, which also makes sport a unifying factor.
Guests included the new Chair of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Janet Cooper OBE, who touched on the many benefits of commonwealth countries partnering to address geopolitical issues, such as trade tariffs.
The guest speaker for the event was British parasport athlete, Kadeena Cox OBE. A world class athlete by any measure, but a humble and relentlessly driven individual, who has overcome so much adversity in her life. A real joy to chat with her about her journey and what comes next.
I was also honoured to sit with the Senior Advisor for the Victorian Government Trade and Investment Office. The UK and the Victorian State Government in Australia engage in a robust trade relationship characterized by the UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This agreement, which entered into force on 31 May 2023, removes tariffs on over 99% of Australian goods exported to the UK, creating new export opportunities and jobs for both countries. The agreement also enhances the trade and investment relationship, supporting economic growth and providing opportunities for businesses to collaborate and innovate. The Lady Mayor will be travelling to a number of cities in Australia shortly promoting UK trade and industry.
